All UN and International Conventions have recognized education is an undeniable right of every child. Similarly, getting education in a clean and healthy environment in school is also a fundamental child right. However, thousands of children in Pakistan are being denied to their basic right as they have no or very limited access to clean water and healthy sanitation facilities in their schools, especially located in rural areas of the country.

Currently, Pakistan has the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children with an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 not attending school, representing 44 per cent of the total population in this age group. The Constitution of Pakistan has declared education as a fundamental constitutional right of every Pakistani child and made it mandatory; however, the school enrollment rates for girl children are very low – only 33% in primary schools and 19% in secondary schools reported in 2015.

Pakistan is the seventh country in the world in terms of lower access to basic sanitation facilities, with 1 in 3 schools in Pakistan lacking basic toilet provision.

Despite making a significant progress in improving access to water and sanitation services, country is facing the challenge of providing sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene in schools – especially for adolescent girls who lack adequate facilities to manage their specific biological needs.

With a view to providing students with a healthy learning environment, Muslim Response USA has launched Pakistan School Water & Sanitation Program. We are constructing latrines, and hand washing facilities, and providing safe and clean drinking water in government schools in rural and underserved areas in Pakistan.

Lack of access to proper sanitation facilities not only negatively impacts the health and wellbeing of children, but it also contributes to the school dropout rates – especially for the female students.
