The troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed violence and bloodshed for over two decades that took the lives of around 70,000 civilians, and hundreds of thousands injured and disabled. In addition, there are over 35,000 widows and over 150,000 orphan children in Kashmir whose lives have been shattered by the ongoing violence.

The decision from the Indian government to revoke Article 370 and 35A from Constitution, which granted special autonomy to Jammu & Kashmir on August 5th came as a shock for the entire population of J&K. Authorities apprehended that this decision could escalate  statewide protests and create a law & order situation, therefore, the government of India imposed curfew and restrictions under section 144 in the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, everyday life is badly affected, schools, colleges, universities, offices, banks and telecommunication have been completely shut.

  • After a continued shutdown for several weeks, during the 2nd week of September  schools/offices were opened and landline phone services restored in 5 districts of Jammu region and Ladakh region while things remain unchanged in the Kashmir Valley.

  • All the  offices, schools, colleges and universities are still closed in the entire valley, the region is  disconnected from the rest of the world, there is chaos and panic among the people living in Kashmir because of the communication blockade.

  • There have been many protests reported and few deaths and injuries too, but the exact number is unknown because of the communication blockade.

  • The crisis is hitting hard the poor, working class and daily laborers, as they cannot go to work and earn livelihood for their families and situation is getting worse day by day, especially for women and children.

  • In addition to the lack of food supplies, there are reports of acute shortage of life-saving medicines in Kashmir valley, which has devastating consequences for women and children if no immediate actions are taken.

  • Internet shut down in Kashmir by the Indian government since Aug 5th, 2019 is the largest ever in a democratic country.

Response USA is providing emergency food assistance to the extremely poor and vulnerable families – especially to widows, orphans and disabled persons in Kashmir. Unprecedented lock down and restrictions on movement have left hundreds and thousands of people - mostly women and children with severe lack of food supplies and hygiene items.
