Cyclone Mocha Hits Bangladesh: Millions in Desperate Need
Cyclone Mocha, one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the Bay of Bengal, has wreaked havoc in Bangladesh. With winds reaching an alarming 250km/h (155 mph), this catastrophic cyclone has left a trail of destruction and displaced hundreds of thousands.
Bangladesh Cyclone Emergency
The ferocious winds and torrential rain have caused widespread flooding and a storm surge of up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet), submerging vast areas of low-lying land. The impact is staggering, as the Cyclone swept through the region, affecting homes to over two million in its path.
Among the hardest hit are already vulnerable communities, including the world’s largest refugee camp, Cox’s Bazaar. While the refugee camp was fortunate to be spared the direct impact of the storm’s eye, the aftermath is still devastating.
Thousands of Rohingya refugees are affected, and the shelters, facilities, and infrastructure put in place for the displaced have been flooded and severely damaged by the heavy winds and rains. The damage is extensive, and the urgent needs for basic necessities and essential services are escalating rapidly.
